Lab leaders say new public data has run out: scarcity is on the side of whoever holds data that was never published
Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's former chief scientist, told NeurIPS in December 2024 "We’ve achieved peak data and there’ll be no more ... There’s only one internet"; Elon Musk, who runs xAI, said in January 2025 that "The cumulative sum of human knowledge has been exhausted in AI training" and that the answer is synthetic data the models write themselves. Prism and eeko build their pitch on the same claim ("Frontier models have already absorbed much of the public internet"; "The open web has been used up").
