Count the wait: a class settlement pays a book's rights holders more than a year after it is agreed, a licence pays on signature
Anthropic funds the $1.5 billion Bartz settlement (about $3,000 a work) in four instalments: $300 million on 2 October 2025, $300 million within five business days of final approval (granted 20 July 2026), $450 million by 25 September 2026 and $450 million by 27 September 2027. The administrator expects the first round of payments to claimants on or before 15 November 2026, more than a year after the deal was announced in September 2025, and works with unresolved author and publisher disputes are left out of that first round.
