New Jersey P.L.2026, c.25, registration of data brokers and data collectors (N.J. P.L.2026, c.25, secs. 2a, 2c(1), 8 (C.56:8-166.20) (approved June 30, 2026))

New Jersey reaches the first-party seller too: a company that sells or licenses its own customers' personal data to a data broker is a data collector and must register annually with the Division of Consumer Affairs and pay a fee scaled by the number of New Jersey consumers (from $5,000 up to $1.5 million). The law took effect on June 30, 2026; only the public registry was deferred 270 days.
