Who buys motion-capture data for AI training, and what is it worth?

AIData.Broker represents the companies and people that hold motion-capture data when they sell to AI labs: we value what they hold against public prices, describe it without their name to every buyer that takes it at the same time and help negotiate the terms. Our fee is 12% of the first $250,000 a sale pays, and nothing if no sale closes.

Captured human movement from optical or inertial suits, cleaned into clips. Humanoid robots and motion models learn from it how people walk, carry and use their hands.

The short answer · figures from the market's records, last reviewed 30 Oct 2026

Who buys motion-capture data for AI training, and what is it worth?

Humanoid-robot and motion-model companies, mostly by paying to collect it new: a vendor quotes $80-150 per hour of collected data for a humanoid programme with mocap suits, and Tesla pays operators $25.25 to $48 per hour to wear a suit for Optimus. A professional studio's clip costs $50 to $200 or more to make, while pre-made game animations sell at $0.50–$3 per clip, and MoCap Online's licence bars AI use of them without permission. So a studio's own library, with its raw capture and performers' consent, is what is scarce.

Raises the price
  • Raw capture kept beside the cleaned clips
  • Hands and fingers, not only the body
  • Everyday tasks: carrying, cooking, tools
  • Many performers of different builds
The rights question

Performers' contracts decide whether their captured movement may be licensed for a new use, and performers' unions now bargain over AI uses. Clips bought from a library are not the studio's to resell: one seller's licence bars AI use without written permission.
