Can a pathology lab license its whole-slide images to AI companies, and what is a slide worth?

AIData.Broker represents the companies and people that hold pathology slides when they sell to AI labs: we value what they hold against public prices, describe it without their name to every buyer that takes it at the same time and help negotiate the terms. Our fee is 12% of the first $250,000 a sale pays, and nothing if no sale closes.

Scanned tissue slides (H&E and special stains) with their diagnoses and reports. Pathology models need many slides of each diagnosis, and few archives outside large hospitals are scanned.

The short answer · figures from the market's records, last reviewed 30 Oct 2026

Can a pathology lab license its whole-slide images to AI companies, and what is a slide worth?

Yes, de-identified, and what a slide fetches turns on its stain and how many come together. HistAI lists H&E whole-slide images with a perpetual commercial licence at $5 a slide for a few and $2 in bulk, and IHC and other stains at $40 down to $23. The National Cancer Institute's imaging archive gives other collections away free, so buyers pay for what public archives lack: rare diagnoses, special stains and each slide's report. The slide label is scanned with the tissue, so it comes off before anything leaves.

The rights question

Slides and their reports are patient health information: under HIPAA they leave only de-identified, which for slides includes the label and barcode scanned with the tissue. Slides a lab read for a hospital or a client may need that client's agreement too.
